The Community of Practice was formed in March 2022. It is a group of archaeologists with backgrounds in archaeometry, landscape archaeology, and data management from prehistoric to modern eras, as well as cultural heritage researchers. The group meets monthly to discuss physical sample management, data collection and publication, and to identify best practices for the identification and description of archaeology and cultural heritage artefacts on the internet.
Goals:
Promote the use of PIDs for material samples.
Articulate sample use cases and workflows within disciplines.
Describe samples in terms of minimum and extended metadata profiles
Challenges:
Diverse use cases and practices
Describing artefacts, assemblages, and locations
Record provenance and access

The IGSN Archaeology Community of Practice has published its Archaeological Sample Profile. It aims to standardise the description of archaeological and cultural heritage samples, taking into account disciplinary-specific use cases and workflows.
Version 1.0 is the first published version of the Archaeological Sample Metadata Profile. It has been released alongside Version 1.0 of the IGSN Archaeology CoP Crosswalk Recommendation that translates the Metadata Profile into DataCite Metadata Schema V4.6 for the purposes of registering IGSN IDs for archaeological samples.
